About
HPC@UNM
Director
Professor
Marc S. Ingber assumed the reigns of the HPCERC on January 1,
2003. He and the Faculty Steering Committee are evaluating new directions
for the center. One important change that reflects the changes was
to rename HPCERC to the University of New Mexico Center for High
Performance Computing (HPC@UNM).

History of HPC@UNM
- The High Performance Computing Education and Research Center
(HPCERC) was established shortly after UNM won the competition
in 1993 to build and run the Maui High Performance Computing Center
(MHPCC).
- In 1995, the University recognized the strategic importance
of high performance computing and established an umbrella center,
the High Performance Computing Education and Research Center (HPCERC)
whose focus was on high performance computing initiatives at UNM.
- HPCERC shortly thereafter created the Albuquerque Resource Center
(ARC). The ARC had two missions: to serve as a resource for university
researchers and the community to access the new parallel programming
computers through training and education and to assist DOD researchers
in using the MHPCC by providing access to UNM faculty expertise.
- In 1997 the ARC was renamed the Albuquerque High Performance
Computing Center (AHPCC) and began to expand its role through
affiliation with the National Center for Supercomputer Applications
(NCSA) as part of the National Computational Sciences Alliance
(Alliance) bid to NSF as one of the new NSF supercomputer partnerships.
- With the end of the University's operation of the MHPCC in September
2001, AHPCC was unified into HPCERC. HPCERC became UNMs
primary resource for HPC.
- In January, 2003 Marc Ingber was named Executive Director of
HPCERC. He created a Faculty Steering Commitee. They focused the
center on four areas. The HPCERC was renamed the University of
New Mexico Center for High Performance Computing in April 2003.
