| Blackbear is for general use as a development and production parallel machine. It is a high bandwidth, low latency interconnect machine. It is very good with jobs that require a lot of message passing between the processors. Blackbear can be used for classes. "Embarrassingly parallel" appelettes that do not require a HBLL interconnect should use the Condor Job Submission Capability to submit jobs on the Turing Cluster or RCDE boxes. | |||||
Blackbear is a development machine purchased from VA Linux. It provides a high performance computing (HPC) linux cluster. The primary users of Blackbear are research assistants, HPC users in the UNM community.
VA Linux & the AHPCC have teamed up. We are developing a Linux Cluster dedicated to computational research.
Black Bear was named in honor of Smokey the Bear, probably
the most famous bear in the history of the United States. It was a New
Mexico black bear cub found alive in a tree after a massive forest fire
in the Lincoln National Forest near Capitan, NM. In 1950, the U.S. Forest
Service and the Advertising Council utilized Smokey as the symbol for
fire prevention campaigns conducted all over the country. Smokey
received much notoriety, lived to a ripe old age, and was buried at
Smokey Bear State Park in Capitan.
The Black Bear (Oso Negro) is common in wooded areas throughout New
Mexico, and the bear's head has been the insignia of the New Mexico
Department of Game and Fish. The Black Bear is a protected game animal
and may only be hunted by license in the proper season.
State legislature made the Black Bear the official animal on February
8, 1963. For more information: http://www.state.nm.us/state/FastFacts
