What's It All About!

The Albuquerque High Performance Computing Center (AHPCC) is a center of the High Performance Computing Education & Research Center (HPCERC), a strategic center of the University of New Mexico. The mission of AHPCC is:

To provide a focus for research and education in advanced high performance computing and interdisciplinary applications and state-of-the-art communications.

AHPCC provides an environment for basic research and education in HPCC that spans academic to production activities. The center complements its sister center, the Maui High Performance Computing Center (MHPCC), at the other "end" of the HPCERC spectrum of activities in education, research and service in high performance computing and communications.

The center is directed by Marc Ingber, Professor, Mechanical Engineering. The Deputy Director is Ernie Herrera.

Center Activities

Center activities include research programs and projects in high performance computing and applications, education and training programs, and the High Performance Computing & Visualization Laboratory. Research is conducted by research staff, research assistants and affiliated faculty. The AHPCC established a High Performance Computing & Visualization Laboratory for research support, prototyping and development. The Laboratory's resources are a 32-node IBM SP system, an Origins 2000 and visualization equipment. The AHPCC conducts training workshops in high performance computing for students, faculty and government and industry users. The center also is the administrative unit for the Scientific & Engineering Computation (SEC) Program, a certificate program aimed at promoting advanced research in high performance computing. The center supports the SGI Accelerated Supercomputing Initiative at Los Alamos National Laboratory, the DoD Major Shared Resource Center at the Aeronautical Systems Center in the United States Air Force, and the national Computational Scientific Alliance, as well as several research contracts with industry, national laboratories and the DoD.

Research Groups

The AHPCC's research activity is centered on its Research Groups. Research Groups are groups composed of faculty, research staff and students who are interested in conducting research in HPCC or HPCC applications areas. These groups form a critical mass of expertise and resources that can develop recognized research programs and centers of excellence, and increase the productivity, opportunities and competitive edge of faculty, staff and students. The AHPCC provides the following support to Research Groups:

Bullet Facilities for meetings, seminars and training; office space for RAs and Post-Docs

Bullet HPCC equipment and software to meet the group's needs

Bullet Staff HPCC systems and applications support, including training

Bullet Funds to support recruitment of Research Assistants in the computational HPC system discipline area

Bullet Support for Post-Docs and Research Assistants when a group and/or department interest is in an AHPCC strategic research interest area
